Gillard begins Top End visit
SYDNEY (AAP) - June 28 - Julia Gillard has arrived in Darwin ahead of her first community cabinet in the Northern Territory as prime minister.
The two-day visit is Ms Gillard's second trip to the NT this month, having met with Aboriginal elders and graziers on the last occasion.
NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson told reporters before Ms Gillard's arrival in Darwin late Tuesday afternoon that the prime minister knew people in the Top End were hurting as a result of the temporary ban of live cattle exports to Indonesia.
"I'm expecting the prime minister will hear that message again loud and clear at the community cabinet she will be holding in Palmerston tomorrow evening," Mr Henderson said.
Ms Gillard and her ministers are expected to make a raft of announcements during their visit to the Top End in what will be Labor's second community cabinet in the NT.
This week also marks the start of formal consultations about the continuation of the federal intervention into remote Aboriginal communities.
