S. Korea's electronic securities transactions dip 5.6 pct in Q2

SEOUL, Sept. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's electronic securities transactions fell 5.6 percent in the second quarter from three months earlier mainly because trading was sluggish amid slumping stock markets, the financial watchdog said Friday.

The volume of online securities transactions reached 1,347 trillion won (US$1.21 trillion) in the April-June period, compared with 1,427 trillion won from the previous quarter, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said.

"The country's online securities trading fell as the stock market suffered
losses, dented by a global credit crunch," the watchdog said. South Korea's
share prices fell 1.7 percent in the three months ending June 30.

Their commission income reached 383.6 billion won in the second quarter, down 3.2
percent from the previous quarter, the FSS said.

Meanwhile, the volume of online financial transactions at 18 local and foreign
lenders, including the Internet and mobile phone banking, rose 1.5 percent
on-quarter to 2,835 trillion won.
