Northern Flood affects over 2,000 households

BANGKOK, June 27 (TNA) - Several provinces in the Thai North, including Nan, Phrae, Lampang, Chiang Rai and Tak, have been heavily flooded caused by continuing downpours over the past couple of days, influenced by the Haima storm.

The flooding in Nan, in particular, have affected over 2,000 local households and damaged main streets in affected areas so far, prompting over 50 schools in five districts to have indefinitely closed and relief agencies to have urgently dispatched assistance to flood victims.

In Nan's Maung District, for instance, the situation became critical Monday morning when the flooding water rose to 50-70 centimeters. Vehicles could not pass through the area; while several retail shops and houses were damaged. Local villagers were busy last night relocating their belongings to higher grounds amid the overflowing Nan River. In addition, an 80-year-old man was reportedly drowned after fainting when his house was submerged by some two-metre-deep flooding water.

The overflowing Nan River also caused widespread flooding in, Pue, Ta Wnag Pha, Wieng Sa, and Phu Pieng Districts, with inundations in some areas rising above two meters, forcing local people living in the affected areas to have been cut off from the outside world due to communication disruptions.

Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjjajiva said that he has closely followed up the situation in Nan and other inundated provinces and will table the issue before the Thai Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, with measures to immediately assist the flood victims. (TNA)
