Border troops on alert after Thailand's withdrawal from WHC

BANGKOK, June 27 (TNA) - Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday that he has ordered Thai troops stationed along the Thai-Cambodian border to be well-prepared, as a precaution, after Thailand has decided to withdraw its membership from the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

General Prayuth insisted that the Thai military is overseeing security, carrying on intelligence activities and monitoring movements along the common border in order to protect the country's sovereignty, as instructed by Thai caretaker defence minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, and that Thai troops have also been sent to inform border residents of the updated situation.

General Prayuth said, however, that Thai and Cambodian soldiers have been in contact on a regular basis since the last spate of clashes along the border earlier this year, but conceding that there is not a high degree of trust between them.

According to the Thai army commander-in-chief, Thailand now has to wait for the Hague-based International Court of Justice's decision, after the Thai caretaker government has decided to withdraw the country's membership from the World Heritage Committee.

Meanwhile, Thai villagers living along the Thai-Cambodian border said that they are afraid of a renewed fighting between Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia following Thailand's decision to withdraw from the World Heritage Committee and have, thus, packed their clothes, food and other necessities in preparation for any evacuation to safe places.
