Pheu Thai Party criticizes Thailand’s withdrawal from the World Heritage Convention

BANGKOK, June 26 (TNA) – The opposition Pheu Thai Party criticized Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti who led a Thai delegation to attend the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Paris for withdrawing Thailand from the World Heritage Convention.

Pheu Thai’s deputy leader Plodprasop Suraswadi said that the decision concerned the status of Thailand in the international community as well as the territory and integrity of the country and thus it should have been approved by the Thai parliament first.

Plodprasop also criticized the caretaker government for rushing into the decision and failing to leave the matter to the next government. He questioned if Suwit's decision was agreed on by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

The deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party added that, despite Thailand’s withdrawal, the World Heritage Committee would continue with its meeting and that the country’s absence would make it easier for the convention to make decision on the Preah Vihear issue. (TNA)
