Thailand withdraws from the World Heritage Convention

BANGKOK, June 26 (TNA) - Thailand withdrew its membership of the World Heritage Convention after it saw that the Cambodia’s Preah Vihear management could put the country at risk of territorial loss and the World Heritage Committee disagreed to delay its consideration on the issue until next year.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti who led Thai delegations to attend the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Paris informed the meeting late Saturday night that Thailand resigned from the World Heritage Convention after the panel ignored negative consequences which might arise from the consideration of Cambodia’s Preah Vihear management plan.

Suwit acknowledged that the World Heritage Committee would likely agree to advance the temple management plan, whose substantial contents and maps were clearly considered to infringe Thailand’s sovereignty, as an agenda item.

Suwit said the withdrawal took immediate effect, which also ended the status of Soamsuda Leeyawanich director-general of the Fine Arts Department, as one of the 21 members of the World Heritage Committee. He added that whether the World Heritage Committee would accept the temple management plan or not, from now on its decision will not have any obligation on Thailand and any impact on the Thai territory.
