Tamaki being considered for OECD deputy head+
TOKYO, June 25 Kyodo -
Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs Rintaro Tamaki has been tapped for the job of deputy secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday.
The Finance Ministry has begun considering Tamaki, who is in charge of foreign exchange policy, for the No. 2 post at the Paris-based OECD ahead of its council meeting next month to approve personnel changes.
Japanese career diplomat Mario Amano has been in the same post at the OECD since 2007. His current term will expire in July.
Takehiko Nakao, director general of the Finance Ministry's International Bureau, is among the top candidates to fill the void to be created at the ministry by Tamaki's likely departure, according to the sources.
Tamaki began his career at the Finance Ministry in 1976 and has been in office as vice minister since 2009. He has had brief stints at the OECD in the past and some observers see him as a future candidate to become its secretary general.
