Exports of Thai leather products growing well

BANGKOK, June 25 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Export Promotion says that exports of Thai leather products have been growing well, as high as some 22 per cent in the first quarter of this year.

The department's Deputy Director General, Malee Chokelamlert, spoke of the promising trend at the Thai Leather Week Mid Year Sale 2011 fair, which kicked off at the department’s exhibition center in Bangkok on June 24.

Malee said that during the one-week event, visitors are specially offered lucrative discounts of up to 80 per cent--although Thailand is now focusing on quality leather products, rather than price wars.

According to the senior official, the United States is the largest market for Thai leather exports, followed by Denmark, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Japan; while emerging overseas markets include Switzerland, Russia and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Veera Lertruangpanyawuth, Vice President of the Thai Leathergoods Association, acknowledged that a weak point of the Thai leather industry was that it comprised a large number of small and medium-scaled enterprises (SMEs), calling on the Thai government to strengthen the Thai leather industry, creating Thailand's brandnames and providing financial support to the local leather businesses to prepare them for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015, with regional trade liberalisation and greater competition.
