Thailand's North and Northeast warned of flash floods

BANGKOK, June 25 (TNA) - Thailand's Meteorological Department has warned people in the country's North and Northeast to brace for heavy downpours and possible flash floods over the next couple of days, influenced by the tropical storm Haima.

The Meteorological Department's director-general, Tosak Wanitkhachorn, said that the tropical storm Haima, centred at the Gulf of Tonkin on Friday, has been downgrading after moving toward and hitting Vietnam earlier, but it has now moving toward neighbouring Laos's western region and is affecting Thailand's northern and northeastern areas with heavy downpours, strong gales and possible flash floods anticipated from June 24-26.

The Thai weather agency chief said that special warnings have been given to people living in or near mountain range areas, including those in Petchabun, Phrae, Loei and Nan Provinces, as there should be mudslides in the areas at risk, before the situation will be returning to normal.

The Meteorological Department cautioned that the downpours in the affected areas could likely hinder voters' turnout for their advance polling on June 26, one week ahead of Thailand's new general election on July 3, suggesting voters to cast their ballots early on Sunday morning instead, as the heavy downpours are expected in the afternoon.

The Thai weather agency said, however, that there should be no problems on the national polling day on July 3 when the situation should return to normal rainy season then. (TNA)
