Thai PM: Army chief will not stage coup

BANGKOK, June 24 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insisted on Friday that the incumbent Thai Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha is a straight-forward person and would not stage a new military coup in the country, as he had promised, even if the Pheu Thai Party, aligned with exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, won the upcoming general election on July 3 and formed the new Thai government.

Abhisit, who is also the ruling Democrat Party's leader, vowed, however, that he would take his political responsibility if his party was defeated at the forthcoming national poll.

Meanwhile, ousted premier Thaksin posted Twitter message via his account @ThaksinLive, extending his apology to the Thai public and asking for forgiveness from those he had offended.

Thaksin also called for the Thai people to jointly bring about reconciliation and make a fresh start, pledging that there would be no revenge on his political opponents if the Pheu Thai Party won the July 3 general election. (TNA)
