"TOGETHER FOR GREEN, CLEAN ULAANBAATAR" EVENT APPROACHES

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ As residents of Ulaanbaatar and Mongolia, we all care about their environment and are keen to ensure that future generations of the Mongolians get to experience more economic opportunities in harmony with nature. To help mobilize people's and stakeholders' energies for this worthy cause, the Government and the UB Mayor Office jointly with the Norwegian Development Agency and the World Bank, are planning a celebration event June 25, 2011 at the Cultural Palace.
Ulaanbaatar has a rich historical heritage since becoming the national capital of Mongolia more than 300 years ago. The city has developed rapidly for past decade as the country's economy grew. A large number of people have come to the city to enjoy economic opportunities and greater availability of services. This also translated into a need for more energy, housing, water, and road infrastructure. From an environmental perspective, the city is under stress: climate change, air pollution, land degradation, water supply shortage, and the deterioration of biodiversity are issues that need the engagement of every resident of the city and all stakeholders to address the issues effectively. These are not only environmental challenges. They also have social and health dimensions that affect the 1.2 million people who live in Ulaanbaatar.
Mongolia is rich in traditions for arts and culture, drama and music. Through generations, people of Mongolia have expressed their wishes, hopes and sentiments through artistic means. Therefore the planned cultural evening event is designed to call on people's emotions to relate to the environmental challenges in Ulaanbaatar and to mobilize their energies for making Ulaanbaatar cleaner and greener. The event will include a short version of the environmental play "An Enemy of the People" by Henrik Ibsen with famous Mongolian actors like Ts.Tumurbaatar, G.Ravdan and others, and a concert combining classical and modern music with environmental protection illustrations by the Mongolian Philharmonic Orchestra, a violinist Ch.Delgertsetseg, pianist B.Odgerel, singer G.Khongorzul and many other local and international artists.
Around 1,300 people, representing the President office, the Parliament, Government, ger areas, as well as representatives of NGOs and a private sector are invited to come Together for a Green and Clean Ulaanbaatar. The event will be opened by Mr. Munkhbayar, a Governor and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, and representatives of development partners that are supporting the event, the Embassy of Norway and the World Bank.
