An official dinner was given on behalf of the Azerbaijan Republic in honor of the Crans Montana Forum in Brussels on June 23 evening.
Azerbaijan's First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO goodwill ambassador, MP Mehriban Aliyeva, attended the reception.
Founder and Chairman of the Crans Montana Forum Jean-Paul Carteron met Mrs. Aliyeva.
Opening the official dinner, Carteron voiced gratification over Mrs.Aliyeva’s presence at the ceremony. "This is the second day in Brussels we are opening Azerbaijan," he said.
Carteron voiced his confidence in a further successful continuation of the cooperation with Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Aliyeva said Azerbaijan had been represented at the Crans Montana Forum for two days. "I would like to express special gratitude to Mr. Carteron for organizing this event," she noted.
Mrs. Aliyeva emphasized that Azerbaijan marks the 20th anniversary of the restoration of its independence in 2011. "Azerbaijan turned into a modern and rapidly developing country in the short period of time. Azerbaijan is the leading country of the South Caucasus region, and records a rapid development in all spheres - political, economic, social and cultural. This morning, President Ilham Aliyev spoke in his speech about Azerbaijan’s successes achieved in recent years. Political and economic reforms conducted in our country are based on the traditions of democracy and secularism. In fact, this tradition has existed since 1918, when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed. Then, Azerbaijan was leading in many spheres in this part of the world. The first secular girls’ school was established in Azerbaijan, women were granted the right to vote and first opera and ballet were created. Unfortunately, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic existed for only 23 months, and the Azerbaijani people dreamed of its independence for many years. Although, we were part of empires in different periods, we have preserved our language, culture, traditions and customs, identity, and regained our independence in 1991," Aliyeva said.
Azerbaijan, as an independent country, pursues a policy of market economy, modernization and ensures the superiority of the rule of law, she said. "Azerbaijan is a country with the highest rate of economic development for several years. This allows us to develop the country and carry out very important social programs focusing on the spheres of health, education and culture. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation also gives priority to all these issues.
Azerbaijan has very strong relations with Europe. Bilateral relations between the EU member-countries and Azerbaijan are based on mutual benefit and respect. Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe for already ten years. Our relations successfully develop and move to a new phase," Mrs.Aliyeva said.
Mrs.Aliyeva expressed a hope that the 'Eastern Partnership Program' will lead to even closer cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union. "I hope that all of you, as the friends of our country, will support this cooperation. Finally, I would like to take an advantage and invite you all to visit Azerbaijan. Once again I express my gratitude to you for being with us this evening, good luck to you and your families," she said.
