Qatar Celebrates World Anti- Drug Day

Doha (QNA) - The State of Qatar has joined world countries' celebrations marking the World Anti- Drug Day which falls on June 26, out of its keenness on supporting all International efforts in fighting drug crimes and addiction and its belief in the importance of international cooperation to face drug abuse
On this occasion, the Standing Committee on Drugs and Alcohol held this morning at Villagio Shopping Centre an exhibition under the theme (let us start a new life together), organized under the auspices of HE the Minister of State for Internal Affairs Sheikh Abdulla bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
Fifteen governmental and private bodies are taking part in the five-day event which aims at sharpening awareness on the negative effects of drug abuse. A number of similar exhibitions are also held at Landmark and Lulu shopping centres as well as at other places in the cities of Khor and Wakra.
The audience and participants toured the exhibition booths to get briefed on the activities of each participating body and its role in fighting drug abuse.
In a speech on this occasion Director General of Public Security and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Drugs and Alcohol Major General Saad bin Jassim Al Kholeifi said the State of Qatar has paid the drug problem special attention due to the threat it poses to the society's security, its development and stability as well as its disruption of economic and social development. This falls under the state's general policy which aims to ensure a high level of security and prosperity of the society, Major General Al-Kholeifi said.
He pointed out that the state has taken several legislative, legal, procedural and preventive measures to combat this problem, with its efforts reaching their climax by the adoption of Qatar National Drug Prevention Strategy (NDPS) 2010-2015 , which formed a clear road map to combat the problem.
On 26 June, the world commemorates the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which serves as a reminder of the need to combat the problems illicit drugs pose to society. (QNA)
Radio and television channels here will broadcast messages on the dangers of drug abuse and preventive methods. An awareness campaign, through bill boards displaying this message placed on highways in association with Qatar Media Corporation, is scheduled the ministry said.
The exhibition hours are from 9am to 10pm. Prominent speakers will lecture on religious, social and health topics as well as drug issues and its prevention from 7pm to 9.30pm. The lectures will be broadcast on the Islam web of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.
Mini exhibitions are simultaneously being held at other prominent malls of Doha, Al Khor and Al Wakrah. Fifteen government and civil authorities are participating in the exhibition that will conclude June 27, the ministry said.
