Thailand beefs-up suppression of pirated products before election

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) - The Thai Commerce Ministry has intensified measures to suppress counterfeit activities, following a rise in intellectual property violations reported ahead of the July 3 election.
Patchima Thanasanti, director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, said the Commerce Ministry had formed a working group, tasked to suppress large scale violations involving online sales, retailers within the red zone and along Thai border areas, as well as post offices.
Patchima also called on the Royal Thai Police Office, the Department of Special Investigation, the Customs Department, the Department of Intellectual Property and other agencies that were members of the working group to strictly enforce existing laws to ensure effective suppression. She noted that nearly 3 million counterfeit products had been seized in the past six months.
The Department of Intellectual Property, meanwhile, had prepared to destroy nearly 100,000 pirated products in Phuket province at the end of this month, and over 1.2 million pirated goods in Bangkok in August. (TNA)
