Thailand wary of EU boycott on exported produce

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) - A trade official warns of the possible effect on Thailand’s exports of fresh fruits and vegetables if EU food inspectors find pest contamination on them again.

Since late 2010, Thailand had stopped exporting 16 fresh produce after the European Union food safety authority threatened to permanently boycott the products if they were found with contamination over five times a year.

Virachai Nopsuwanwong, Deputy Director of Thailand’s International Trade Negotiation Department, under the Ministry of Commerce, said that Thailand could no longer take risks from the EU boycott, and should work harder to improve the quality of exported vegetables.

Virachai urged the Thai government to pay closer attention to the problem, in order to regain confidence for Thai products, and help increase the export volume of Thai food ingredients.

Meanwhile, the EU had issued a stern warning over Thai produce found with contamination in the past two years, saying they would be boycotted if found with a recurring problem. Even though only small portion Thai exporters had the pest problem, the boycott could affect the whole industry. (TNA)
