New Thai government urged to work out disaster plans

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) - Calls have been made for the next Thai government to work out disaster plans as tectonic movements and global warming are causing unexpected earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and landslides.

Samith Dharmasaroj, chair of the National Disaster Warning Council, made the request on Thursday, noting that political parties were simply campaigning with economic and social policies ahead of the July 3 election, while overlooking disaster issues.

Mr Samith suggested for instance, that there should be a plan to cope with a possible collapse of dams in Kanchanaburi province, especially Sri Nakarin and Vajiralongkorn dams, which stood on Srisawat and Three Pagodas fault lines. He warned that even an earthquake on the Sakaing Fault in Myanmar would affect the dams.

According to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, if the dams burst, they would cause a 25-meter-deep flood that would not only affect Kanchanaburi, but also Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Bangkok and Samut Songkhram provinces as well as south-bound travelers. (TNA)
