Thai political parties debate over economic and social policies

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) - Key political parties in Thailand are seeing it eye-to-eye in a public debate on economic and social policies ahead of the July 3 election.

Highlights of the three-hour event titled, “the future of Thailand”, hosted by Sripathum University here on Thursday, were the presence of leading political figures, including Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, who said he considered farmers’ problems as a key factor of the Thai economy. Mr Abhisit insisted that if re-elected, he would proceed with his produce price insurance scheme and freeze the local diesel price at 30 baht a liter.

The Democrat leader added that narcotic problems should be tackled with comprehensive solutions, and proposed the use of technologies to block drug trafficking at border checkpoints around Thailand.

Meanwhile, Yongyuth Wichaidit, head of the Democrat’s arch-rival Pheu Thai Party, stressed that the plight of farmers was a major issue in Thailand, saying that his party planned to introduce credit cards for farmers to reduce their dependence on creditors.

Mr Yongyuth revealed that his party would also revive its rice mortgage scheme to help farmers, besides improving educational services and empowering communities nationwide against drugs. (TNA)
