JAXA Begins Offering Positioning Signals from Satellite "Michibiki"
Tokyo (Jiji Press) - The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said Wednesday it has made positioning signals from its "Michibiki" satellite publicly available to complement the U.S. global positioning system.
According to the government-affiliated agency better known as JAXA, GPS receivers that use positioning signals from the Michibiki are currently being developed by 10 companies. The first such receiver is expected to be released by the end of this year.
The quasi-zenith satellite was launched from the space center on Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, last September.
After starting tests in December, JAXA verified the complete accuracy of the Michibiki. The accuracy of the current GPS was improved by 30 to 40 pct by combining signals from the Michibiki and the current GPS.
JAXA started full-scale operations of the Michibiki at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
