Thailand insists not to accept Cambodia's proposed Preah Vihear management plan

BANGKOK, June 22 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday that a conclusion has not been reached with the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), as Thailand wants the UN panel to postpone its consideration on a Preah Vihear Temple vicinity management plan proposed by Cambodia--which has caused problems between the two neighbouring countries.

Abhisit quoted Thai caretaker natural resources and environment minister Suwit Khunkitti, who has headed a Thai delegation to attend the ongoing meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Paris from June 19-29, as reporting that the Thai delegation was proposing a draft resolution to the World Heritage Committee and concerned officials were discussing the issue.

Abhisit revealed that Thailand is telling the World Heritage Committee that the management plan, which was unilaterally proposed by Cambodia, will only compound border rows; while the postponement of the agenda will allow all parties concerned to discuss solutions to the problems related to the ancient Preah Vihear Temple, as well as its conservation.

According to the Thai Democrat premier, Bangkok is giving its side of stories to the World Heritage Committee to cope with those of Phnom Penh, being presented and lobbied for an international advocate by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An.

At this stage, Abhisit said that Thailand is to convince the World Heritage Committee that it should be inappropriate to consider the unilateral Preah Vihear management plan of Cambodia, and that the UNESCO panel should, instead, promote constructive collaboration related to the issue. (TNA)
