Former PM Hawke recovering from pneumonia
SYDNEY (AAP) - June 22 - Former prime minister Bob Hawke's recovery from pneumonia is evidence you can't keep a good man down, Trade Minister Craig Emerson says.
The 81-year-old Labor stalwart was admitted to St Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney last week after picking up a virus on an international flight, a spokeswoman from his office said.
Dr Emerson, a former senior policy adviser to Mr Hawke, said the ex-leader had responded to treatment well and had been cured of his ailment.
"You can't keep a good man down," Dr Emerson told reporters in Canberra.
A hospital spokesman said Mr Hawke was sitting up in bed on Wednesday and was in good spirits.
"He is talking politics and doing crosswords," the spokesman said.
Mr Hawke was expected to go home on Thursday and was grateful for the support he received from hospital staff, the spokesman said.
