Democrat Party prepares for major rally at Ratchaprasong Intersection

BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) - Key figures from Thailand’s ruling Democrat Party are inspecting Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong Intersection, where a major speech rally will be held this Thursday.

Sathit Wongnongtoey, who joined the inspection on Tuesday, said he had requested police security to secure the rally site as some 10,000 people were expected to turn up at the night’s event.

Sathit also urged the Pheu Thai Party’s top list candidate, Yingluck Shinawatra, to openly ask supporters of the red shirt United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) not to disturb the rally to avoid confrontation.

In 2010, Ratchaprasong intersection was known as a major rally site of the UDD, which held protests against the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Ninety-one civilians and government officials were killed during the year's March-May clashes between government forces and the protesters. (TNA)
