Highest prices foreseen for Thai sugar exports

BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) - Thai exporters are foreseen to now enjoy historic high prices for their sugar and sugarcane exports over the next couple of years, thanks to rising global prices of the major Thai commodity products.
Prasert Tapaniyangura, secretary-general to the Thai government's sugar and sugarcane committee, said on Tuesday his panel's recent survey had found that the world prices of raw sugar were likely to temporarily surge to about 0.26 US dollar per pound next month and to remain at 0.21-0.22 US dollar per pound, its historic highest level, over the next three years.
Prasert acknowledged that the 2011-2012 production period should, therefore, represent the "golden year" for all those involved in the Thai sugarcane and sugar industries, including local sugarcane growers, sugar plants and exporters.
Prasert assessed that Thailand could totally produce some 95.35 million tonnes of sugarcane and 9.64 tonnes of sugar in the 2011-2012 period, also at their historic highest levels, suggesting those in the Thai sugarcane and sugar industrial chain to speed up their advance sales of the two commodities at 0.24-0.25 US dollars per pound to ensure their higher income.
The Thai sugar and sugarcane panel chief said, however, that further improvements of Thailand's logistics-related systems are needed to facilitate and sustain the growing Thai sugar and sugarcane industries, and that domestic prices of sugar are believed to remain intact due to an envisaged surplus of world sugar supply over the next three years and the Thai government's political policy on curbing the domestic prices of major Thai commodities.
