Man blinded in Qld pub glassing attack

A man has permanently lost the vision in his right eye after being glassed at a popular Brisbane hotel, a court has been told.
Aaron Townsend, 27, was hit in the face with a glass during an altercation at the Chalk Hotel at Woolloongabba on October 31, 2009.
The glass shattered on impact, cutting his face and blinding him in one eye.
Hakim Gulbis-Paris, 26, pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court to causing Townsend grievous bodily harm.
However, the jury found him guilty on Friday after a two-week trial.
He was sentenced to four years' jail on Monday and will be eligible for parole in June 2013.
The court was told the incident occurred shortly after Gulbis-Paris and his friends arrived at the hotel about 2.30am (AEST).
Prosecutor Glen Cash said Townsend, who had drunk around 15 glasses of spirits and taken some speed, punched Gulbis-Paris while he was standing on the dance floor.
Gulbis-Paris then used an underarm throw to toss the glass at Townsend.
The court was told it was unclear why the altercation started.
Judge Hugh Botting described the incident as "tragic" and said the sentence reflected the community's denunciation of violence in pubs.
