Thai Disease Control Department dismisses person-to-person E. coli transmission

BANGKOK, June 20 (TNA) - The Department of Disease Control, under the Thai Public Health Ministry, reports that the E. coli infection in Germany was not through human-to-human transmission, but via contaminated food and water.

Dr Suwannachai Watanayingcharoenchai, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control, confirmed the report on Monday, noting also that preventive measures in Thailand were well in place and that there was a very slim chance for the bacteria to spread here. He insisted that person-to-person transmission of the E. coli could only occur through touching, sexual intercourse or transfusion.

The Deputy Director-General said that people could protect themselves from the deadly o104 strain of the E. coli by washing their hands regularly both before and after a meal, eating thoroughly cooked food, and using clean chopping board and serving spoons.

Meanwhile, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director of the Bureau of General Communicable Diseases, suggested agencies concerned to carefully screen visitors from Germany and Europe, including imported food the areas. He also advised people with renal failure to seek immediate medical care, even if they did not have symptoms of bacterial infection, including diarrhea. (TNA)
