Thai exports up 25% in January-May 2011

BANGKOK, June 20 (TNA) - Thailand's Ministry of Commerce has reported that the country's exports reached 93.90 billion US dollars in the first five months of this year, a 25 per cent increase from the corresponding period of last year.

Thai caretaker Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai spoke of the update on Monday, saying that Thai exports in May alone stood at 19.46 billion US dollars, a 17.6 per cent year-on-year rise, or at 580 billion baht.

Given the continual export growth, Pornthiva acknowledged that Thailand has maintained to gain a trade surplus of about 2.18 billion US dollars during the first five months of this year, or of some 277 million US dollars last month alone.

According to the minister, exports of Thai farm products have mostly expanded in the January-May 2011 period, with shipments of Thai rice to overseas markets alone growing by 99 per cent year-on-year, followed by those of Thai rubber products by 86.5 per cent year-on-year and food products by 27 per cent year-on-year--although Thai exports of industrial goods have expanded by only 2.1 per cent year-on-year during the same five-month period due mainly to a plunge in Thai automobile exports by 36.9 per cent year-on-year in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan's Northeast on March 11.
