Exporters predict the prices of Thai rice will increase after mid-2011

BANGKOK, June 20 (TNA) - The Thai Rice Exporters Association says that rice prices are increasing steadily and that the paddy price should exceed 10,000 baht per ton in the second half of this year.

The forecast was made on Monday at the “Thailand Rice Convention” in Bangkok, attended by representatives of the government and the private sectors from over 50 countries.

The event, aimed to benefit the rice industry with information exchanges while promoting Thailand as the world’s central rice market, was seen as another preparation for the industry in welcoming the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Korbsuk Lemsuree, President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said the paddy price currently stood between 9,000 and 9,500 baht per ton, and as the end of the rice cultivation season was approaching, rice shipment prices could rise to about 580 to 590 US dollars per ton.

She also said the climbing prices of Thai rice could rise even further if a rice mortgage scheme was implemented.

Also speaking at the meeting, Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said that her ministry was trying to increase Thai rice exports to maintain Thailand’s position as the world’s biggest rice exporter. She said the Thailand should produce over 20.26 million tons of rice in 2011 and should be able to increase rice exports from 9.05 million tons last year to 10 million tons this year.

The Thai private sector, meanwhile, expressed concerns that the unreasonably high prices of rice may prompt overseas buyers to turn to buy rice from other countries, which would lower the sales of Thai rice. (TNA)
