TOILET TRANSIT POINT FOR SMUGGLER

WANG KELIAN (Malaysia) Sept 11 (Bernama) -- A 51-year old smuggler chose a novel way to store contraband when he used a toilet store close to the Malaysia-Thailand border near here to keep his goods before taking them across the border.

Alas, his modus operandi was blown away when the Perlis Anti-Smuggling
Unit
(UPP) sniffed him out Wednesday night.

UPP commander DSP Zakaria Abd Rahman said at 7pm Wednesday night his
personnel observed the man unloading 1,184kg of cooking oil in plastic bags, 20
one-kilogramme bottles of the same, 17 sacks of wheat weighing 425kg and 160kg
of sugar.

Zakaria told reporters here a UPP squad moved in and seized the items,
arrested the man and took posssesion of a RM20,000 lorry.

He said the smuggler would take advantage of the time Muslims were
preparing to break fast to store the items as the border check-point would be
closed at 7pm. He would then take the goods across in small quantities when the
check-point opened the following day at 7am.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for
possessing controlled items without a licence and if found guilty he could be
fined RM15,000 or jailed for three years or both.

Wang Kelian is a Perlis border town on the Malaysia-Thailand Border. It is
one of two border crossings between Malaysia and Thailand in the northern state
of Perlis
