Army chief asks govt to revoke State of Emergency Decree
BANGKOK, Sept 11 (TNA) - Thai Army Commander in Chief General Anupong
Paochinda proposed to the caretaker government on Thursday that it revoke the State of Emergency Decree imposed in Bangkok last week as it negatively affected the general public, saying police were able to control the situation.
In particular the ban on gatherings of over five people is an
inconvenience to the public, Gen. Anupong said.
He has proposed to Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat as acting prime
minister to consider lifting the State of Emergency Decree as he believed
the decree had adversely affected the normal activities of general public
-- particularly the ban on gathering of five people for
politically-related activities.
Samak Sundaravej, who was striped from his post as prime minister by the
court verdict on Tuesday, announced enforcements of an Emergency Decree on
Public Administration in Emergency Situations in the capital on September
2 after clashes in the streets between supporters of the pro-government
National United front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and the
anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD).
Once the decree was revoked, the army chief said, the emergency decree
enforcement committee headed by him would eventually be dissolved.
However, the situation assessment by the officials concerned from Royal
Thai Police Bureau and the military concluded that normal law enforcement
would be able to control the situation as the police asked the military to
give a helping hand if needed.
The Constitution Court on Tuesday ruled on Tuesday that Mr. Samak violated
the charter due to his having hosted cooking shows on commercial
television stations and he must leave the office immediately while his
cabinet ministers would become caretaking ministers.
Gen. Anupong said the ways to lead the country out of the existing turmoil
would be under the responsibility of the parliament as it was scheduled to
elect new prime minister on Friday and the forming of government.
The new premier should be a person who could improve the situation and
there should not be any conflict, he said.
The Army chief added that the idea of setting up of a national unity
government was the best idea to end the political crisis but he conceded
that it was difficult task. (TNA)
