China says committed to peace, stability in South Asia

Colombo, Sept 10 (PTI) Describing South Asia as a "very important" region, China Wednesday pledged to contribute to its stability and development as an observer of South Asian Association for Regional Coperation (S.A.A.R.C.) grouping.

These remarks were made by the Communist nation's Foreign
Minister Yang Jiechi as he wrapped up his maiden two-day visit
to the Sri Lankan capital.

As an observer of the S.A.A.R.C, China will continue to
take "an active part in the related activities," Yang told
reporters here.

"... we will contribute our bit to peace, stability and
development in this very important region of South Asia," he
said.

The Chinese minister also congratulated Sri Lanka for
successfully hosting the 15th S.A.A.R.C. Summit last month.

Yang, who arrived here from New Delhi Tuesday night, held
talks with his Sri Lankan counterpart Rohitha Bogollagama and
expressed his country's commitment to support the island
nation's efforts to preserve its sovereignty and unity.

"Politically, we deeply appreciate the firm 'one-China'
policy pursued by the Sri Lankan Government and reiterated by
the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister. We appreciate your
understanding and support for China when it comes to such
sensitive issues like Taiwan, Tibet related issues and so on."

Bogollagama said Sri Lanka appreciated China's support.
"We are a country that is committed ... to counter-terrorism
and ushering democracy to all parts of Sri Lanka and in this
regard we welcome our friends and ... China has been a major
strength in pursuing our political goals."

The Chinese minister and his Sri Lankan counterpart also
signed an agreement for providing Colombo assistance worth USD
7 million to enhance bilateral economic and technical
cooperation. PTI TVS
