British ambassador meets Thai political leader

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - British Ambassador to Thailand Asif Ahmad met the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Yongyuth Wichaidit, on Friday, expressing his hope for the sound democratic development in Thailand.

After the one-hour talk, the top British envoy said that he had discussed Thai political issues with the Pheu Thai Party's leader, as he is duty-bound to study government formation plans of Thai political parties and to assess which parties are likely to be part of the new Thai coalition government and part of the opposition after the country's forthcoming general election, set on July 3.

In response to concerns that observers from the European Union (EU) could affect Thailand's upcoming national poll, the British ambassador revealed that the 27-member EU, in which Britain is a member state, would not send its official representatives, but only two experts to develop understanding and study the Thai electoral process and would not make any comment regarding the July 3 election.
