Automobile sales in Thailand drop for first time in 21 months

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - Automobile sales in Thailand dropped for the first time in 21 months in May 2011 due mainly to shortage of auto parts for locally-produced Japanese vehicles.
Japan-based Toyota Motors (Thailand) Co. reported on Friday that the country's automobile sales last month totaled 55,851 units, a 10.2 per cent year-on-year drop, representing the first decline in 21 months, as Japanese car makers reduced their production due to the shortages of auto parts.
Toyota said, however, that Thailand's total sale of vehicles of all kinds in the first five months of this year rose by 26.4 per cent year-on-year, to 361,753 units staying at a new high, with sales of passenger cars alone growing by 33.6 per cent year-on-year and those of commercial vehicles rising by over 21 year-on-year.
According to the latest report from Toyota, Thailand's automobile sales in June tend to rise, as Japanese car manufacturers are restoring their production capacities and the country's ongoing vote campaigns are stimulating the Thai economy. (TNA)
