Thai private sector wants next government to forge for national unity

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - The Thai private sector wants the new government after the forthcoming general election, set on July 3, to quickly promote national unity and to forge for progress of local state enterprises.

During an economic forum on the competitiveness of the Thai economy and local state enterprises in Bangkok on Friday, Payungsak Chartsuthipol, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), insisted that the newly-elected Thai government needs to quickly promote national unity to facilitate national missions, including the continuing development and growth of the Thai economy within the democratic framework.

Payungsak said that after the new Thai government takes office, the local private sector will call a meeting to compile its proposals for the country's economic development, urging the new government to make quick decisions on key issues, namely oil prices and the official control on domestic diesel prices.

Piyasvasti Amranand, President of Thai Airways International (THAI), the national flag carrier, noted, on the other hand, that local state enterprises will progress if they have competitiveness, are free from unreasonable political interventions, have flexibility in their business operations and are able to raise funds through stock exchanges.

Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva responded to emerging concerns over the declining state oil fund by saying that he has kept monitoring the status of the state oil fund and found that its decline has slowed down. Abhisit assured that retail diesel and gas prices on the domestic market could be further frozen, with the diesel prices alone at 30 baht a liter until this September, acknowledging if global oil prices remain at their present levels, there will be no need for the government's state oil fund to seek loans.
