Thailand invents new iodine producing machine

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health has introduced a newly-invented machine to produce iodized salt, as part of the government's move to widely promote domestic consumption of the mineral required for human growth.

The new invention came from cooperation between the ministry's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Bangkok-based King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology. Under the cooperation, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology will provide advice, installations and maintenance services for local manufacturers who purchase the salt iodization machine, which will be available in two different sizes with their separate capacities of producing iodized salt of 7.2 tons and 2.4 tons a day respectively.

Thai caretaker public health minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that the cooperative program is aimed to address the problem of iodine deficiency in the country, which has been included on the national agenda. Jurin acknowledged that the Thai government has allocated a 32.4 million-baht budget to support the invention of the iodine producing machine and to subsidise local food producers.

Iodine is a mineral required for growth and development of human bodies, especially for children's intellect. The mineral should be consumed regularly, though in small amounts. (TNA)
