Thai FDA finds normal levels of radiation from food imported from Japan

BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Thursday that normal levels of radiation have been detected from food products imported from Japan so far.

FDA Secretary General Dr. Pipat Yingseri acknowledged that his agency was screening food products imported from Japan, including fruits and vegetables and seafood, and that 331 importers had complied with regulations imposed by the Thai Public Health Ministry by showing certificates of origins (COO) and certificates of analysis (COA) indicating the types of food and the levels of their radiation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Suwanchai Watanayingcharoenchai, Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of Disease Control, said although there has been no infection of the deadly O104 strain of the E. coli bacteria in Thailand so far, his ministry has prepared special treatment and surveillance for people who suffer from diarrhea, including ordering doctors of both government and private hospitals via SMS to take good care of patients who suffer from watery, bloody and mucous diarrhea, especially those arriving from Europe.

In the meantime, Dr. Suwanchai noted that his ministry's Department of Medical Sciences and 14 regional medical sciences centers are ready to conduct tests for the O104 bacterium strain; while the Department of Health is distributing 150,000 booklets instructing people about food safety, including using serving spoons and frequently wash their hands to prevent any infection with E. coli and other intestinal diseases.

Dr. Suwanchai said that as of June 14, 3,255 people in Europe had been infected with the deadly O104 bacterium strain, 36 had died, comprising 35 Germans and one Swede, and that new infections have now slowed down in Europe. (TNA)
