Authorities promote Thai youths’ understanding on AEC

BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - The Thai government, through the Ministries of Commerce and Education, is inculcating Thai youths to properly understand on the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), set to be formed by 2015.

Srirat Ratthapana, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Trade Negotiations, said that her department and the Thai Ministry of Education will sign a memorandum of understanding or MOU on bilateral cooperation on promoting Thai youths to properly understand the AEC by July 7. Under the MOU, the two Thai parties will jointly develop a curriculum under which Thai students can learn on trade negotiations within bilateral and multilateral frameworks related to the AEC.

Srirat revealed that she also led a team of Thai delegations to attend a recent meeting on the establishment of a free trade area (FTA) between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN and China, under which both service and investment activities will be liberalised.

Srirat said once fully implemented, the ASEAN-Sino FTA will further facilitate the flow of ASEAN goods into the immense Chinese market, acknowledging, however, such issues as sanitary & phytosanitary, commodity standards and relaxed custom processes have remained a stumbling block of the regional free trade talks.

The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official insisted she believed that both ASEAN and China could soon overcome the remaining hurdles through Beijing's compromise, as those previously agreed by other ASEAN's dialogue partners during their talks on ASEAN-India, ASEAN-New Zealand, ASEAN-Australia, ASEAN-Korea and ASEAN-Japan FTAs to support regional trade and investment liberalisation.
