Myanmar’s deputy foreign minister visits Thailand
BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - Myanmar’s Deputy Foreign Minister U Muang Myint is paying a four-day visit to Thailand this week, from June 14-17, for talks with Thai authorities on Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand.
Led by Thai Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, the Myanmar deputy foreign minister visited a labour office in Thailand's central Samut Sakhon Province Wednesday to observe registration services for illegal immigrant workers, including those from Myanmar.
The Thai government has given illegal immigrant workers a grace period until July 14, 2011 to legalized their stays in Thailand, after which a major crackdown on illegal immigrant workers will be carried out.
Chalermchai said that the program will help the Thai government to properly treat illegal immigrant workers, control communicable diseases and prevent crime on the Thai soil.
Some 500,000 out of a total of about 800,000 immigrant workers from neighbouring Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia have registered with the Thai Labour Ministry so far. (TNA)
