KRC:Some Bt39b will be changed hands during Thailand's electoral campaigns

BANGKOK, June 16 (TNA) - The KASIKORN Research Centre (KRC) says that some 39 billion baht has been changing hands during ongoing electoral campaigns of Thai political parties in the lead-up to the country's next general election, set on July 3, 2011.

The Thai private think tank acknowledged that the money is being directed to political canvassers and election-related businesses, namely printing houses, vehicles, sound systems, tents and stages for hire, flower shops, inkjet vinyl sheets and leaflet distributions.

The Bangkok-based research house said that the lion’s share of the projected 39-billion-baht election-related cash circulation, or about 11 billion baht, is expected to be spent in the Northeast, followed by 6.5 billion baht in the North and 6.3 billion baht in Bangkok.

According to KRC, Thai political parties have installed a number of outdoor campaign placards and some of them have even issued newspapers and magazines, operated cable TV and community radio, as well as resorted to such innovative electoral campaign tactics as the use of the Internet and online social networks to reach their target eligible voters, all the activities of which are costly.
