Oil companies, APMCA join ‘helmet awareness campaign’


Karachi, June 15, 2011 (PPI): Oil companies and All Pakistan Motorcycle Dealers Association (APMCA) have voluntarily agreed to join hands with Sindh Home Department in ‘helmet awareness campaign’.

The consensus was reached at a meeting convened by Consultant on Home Affairs Sharfuddin Memon on Wednesday at his office. The meeting was attended by Dr. Rasheed Juma, ex-IGP Sindh Asad Jehangir Khan, representatives of Caltex, Shell, Total Parco oil companies and a 6-member delegation of APMCA headed by its president Haji Naseer.

The representatives of oil companies agreed upon setting up awareness banners, boards etc besides dressing up salesmen with special costumes to highlight the importance of wearing helmet while riding motorcycles.

The meeting also decided to put up helmets on sale within the premises of petrol stations in order to facilitate the riders.

APMCA offered 10 percent discount on helmets at special camps/stalls, to be established with the coordination of CDGK and Karachi Traffic Police, in different areas of the city. The association also volunteered to play its part in the awareness campaign by displaying the importance of helmets at auto parts markets, motorbikes and even on helmets.

Memon lauded the volunteering of oil companies and APMCA and maintained that objective of this campaign is to minimize the risks of head injuries in cases of accidents.

He informed that special advertisements are being issued to the press by the Home Department to create awareness among the general public in this regard.
