Thailand prepares for upcoming World Heritage Committee meeting

BANGKOK, June 15 (TNA) - Thailand is preparing for the upcoming meeting of the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, set to be held in Paris from June 19-29, during which Cambodia's proposed management plan of the Preah Vihear Temple will be raised.

Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva met representatives of parties concerned, including those from the Thai Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Natural Resources and Environment and Defence, at Government House in Bangkok Wednesday to discuss the country's preparations for the 35th UN World Heritage Committee Meeting.

Acting Thai Gvernment Spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said that Abhisit told the working group in charge of responding to the 35th World Heritage Committee Meeting to prioritise national interest and to protect national territory and sovereignty, as well as to adhere to the principles of the World Heritage Committee, which Thailand is a member.

According to the spokesman, Abhisit also praised UNESCO for trying to solve the unsettled Thai-Cambodian issue and working with all concerned parties.

The spokesman revealed that Thai caretaker Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti will leave for a meeting with Cambodian authorities on June 18 before attending the 10-day World Heritage Committee meeting. He denied rumours that Thailand will withdraw from the World Heritage Committee.

Meanwhile, the meeting of the Thai working group did not discuss the recent arrest of a Cambodian, alleged for spying in Thailand, as the Thai judicial system is handling the case separately. (TNA)
