Thailand observes ASEAN Dengue Day
NONTHABURI, June 15 (TNA) - Thailand observed the ASEAN Dengue Day, which falls on every June 15, with an official event, among others, organised by the Thai Ministry of Public Health in Bangkok's suburban Nonthaburi Province.
Thai Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Paijit Warachit said when presiding over the event that, as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has designated every June 15 the ASEAN Dengue Day, all the ASEAN's 10 member nations, including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, have agreed on their collective campaigning against the spread of the dengue fever in the region. Dr. Paijit acknowledged 2011 was the first year that all the 10 ASEAN members jointly launched a campaign against the fatal mosquito-borne disease.
In Thailand alone, agencies concerned, including the Ministries of Interior, Education and Natural Resources and Environment, as well as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or BMA, also took the occasion to sign an agreement on a joint anti-dengue campaign to prevent and cope with any outbreak of the deadly disease through the eradication of mosquito larva sources.
According to the senior official, the number of dengue fever patients in Thailand fell to 14,000 during the first five months of this year, from 100,000 in 2010, but children aged 10-14 were mostly infected with the disease during the January-May 2011 period, compared to those aged 1-5 in previous years.
Meanwhile, the spread of the dengue hemorrhagic fever in Thailand's northern Uttaradit Province has been found three times greater than elsewhere.
Dr. Paisarn Tunyawanijkul, Uttaradit's public heath chief, noted that the dengue hemorrhagic fever has remained a provincial concern, and that sources of mosquito larvae need to be eradicated seriously, as over 100 dengue fever patients have been reported since last month, three times higher than the corresponding period of last year. Therefore, Dr. Paisarn said, over 10,000 health volunteers and concerned officials have been mobilized to contain the dengue fever in the province. (TNA)
