Chicken meat in Thailand is mostly safe for consumption:Authority

BANGKOK, June 14 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health said Tuesday that most chicken meat sold on the domestic market is safe and free from contamination, warning local consumers not to be panic.

Dr. Somyos Deerasamee, Director General of the ministry's Department of Health, suggested that consumers only be more careful when buying chicken meat to ensure that the skin of any fresh chicken meat must not bruise when being pressed and it must not have foul smell, and that they buy fresh chicken meat only at some 3,000 stores or outlets across the country which meet his department's hygienic standards.

Dr. Somyos' remarks followed a raid by Thai livestock officials into four illegal poultry slaughterhouses in Pak Chong District of Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima Province and seized nine tonnes of dead chicken--which were later detected with toxic formaldehyde and sulphur dioxide, sparking public panic.

The senior Thai health official acknowledged, however, that chicken meat contaminated with formaldehyde or sulphur dioxide, even if cooked, is not safe for consumption as the toxic substances remain in the meat and a high level of those substances in a human body will pose a risk of cancer. (TNA)
