Thailand hosts ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference

BANGKOK. June 14 (TNA) - Regional delegations are gathering in Bangkok this week to attend a Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre conference, hosted by the Thai capital from June 13-17.

The participants from 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN, Japan and international organizations were set to discuss issues on the sustainable development of regional fisheries under the theme of “Fish for the People 2020:Adaptation to a Changing Environment.

The five-day ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference is also aimed at enhancing the contribution of fisheries to food security in the region.

Thai caretaker agriculture and cooperatives minister Theera Wongsamut said that the Resolution and Plan of Action on Sustainable Fisheries for Food Security for ASEAN Toward 2020 was also expected to be adopted on the last day of the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference to serve as a policy framework and direction for the sustainable development of fisheries in the region, and that the resolution would then be submitted to a ministerial-level meeting for further consideration.

According to the Thai minister, it is foreseen that the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference will contribute to closer cooperation among countries in the region as well, helping reinforce the ASEAN solidarity toward the formation of the ASEAN Community by 2015. (TNA)
