Sunken sugar barge successfully salvaged

BANGKOK, June 14 (TNA) - A 500-tonne sugar barge sunken in the Chao Phraya River in Thailand's central Ayutthaya Province has been successfully salvaged after an accident which polluted the stream nearly two weeks ago.

The successful operation, which was completed yesterday, was attributed to the use of four large pontoons, three boats and joint efforts of all parties concerned.

The barge carrying some 2,400 tons of brown sugar hit a bridge pillar and sank in Ayutthaya's Phu Khao Thong District on May 31, causing damage to local villagers’ property and water pollution as spilled sugar killed thousands of tons of fishes and other aquatic lives in the river.

Thai caretaker deputy transport minister Kuakul Danchaiwijit said, however, that the barge owner had promised to pay compensation for any damage incurring from the accident, and that to ease subsequent impacts caused by the incident, he had ordered the construction of a concrete embankment to prevent future erosion.
