Thailand to host WEF in 2012

BANGKOK, June 14 (TNA) - Thailand has been selected to host the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the first time next year.

Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who attended the 20th WEF on East Asia in Jakarta Monday, said that Thailand welcomes the decision and is ready to host the 2012 WEF.

Abhisit revealed that he tried to promote confidence in Thailand among countries in the region during his one-day visit to neighbouring Indonesia, presenting to them that the Thai economy expanded well at about 7.8 per cent last year, thanks to the country's strong macro-economic fundamentals, and that Thai politics is developing through a democratic process with the next general election set on July 3, 2011, which should reflect the country's high capabilities despite political turmoil over the past two years.

The Democrat caretaker Thai premier acknowledged that he received positive response from international business delegations attending the latest WEF.

Abhisit said he also met and held talks with Dr. Klaus Schwab, founder and administrative director of the WEF, and senior executives of the Unilever Corporation, joined a televised BBC TV debate on the topic "Who Owns the Wealth" and participated in the East Asian Forum's closing ceremony. (TNA)
