PM (Pak-Afghanistan have capacity to manage their own affairs, Gilani)
Islamabad (PPI) - Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan and Afghanistan have capacity to manage their own affairs and are capable to deliver.
He was speaking at the luncheon he hosted in honour of the President Hamid Karzai and members of his delegation at PM House in Islamabad on Saturday .
The Prime Minister said Afghanistan stands high in Pakistan's foreign policy priority and therefore, we make all efforts to strengthen friendly ties with that country.
He said our relations with Afghanistan are based on the cardinal principles of inter-state relations, respect for Afghanistans unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and non-interference in its internal affairs. We would continue to abide by these principles.
The Prime Minister said the situation in Afghanistan has entered a crucial stage. With dawn of peace in sight, reconstruction and development efforts need to be redoubled.
There is a dire need now to chalk out a clear path to embark on cooperation in trade and economic spheres.
He expressed pleasure over extensive discussions on development matters in bilateral talks this afternoon. He said they discussed the ways and the means to realize not only our bilateral potential but also the regional potential.
The Prime Minister said there is vast scope bilaterally to cooperate in areas such as connectivity, infrastructure development, energy, mines and minerals, Special Economic and Industrial Zones and the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs).
Realization of mega projects like Peshawar-Jalalabad-Herat Expressway and rail link between Peshawar and Jalalabad will benefit our two countries and the people.
It is a momentous occasion since the new Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement has come into force which will usher in more economic opportunities for the two countries and beyond.
He said we could now consider jointly proposing trilateral transit trade agreements with the Central Asian Republics to maximize the available economic opportunities.
He Pakistan has constantly supported Karzai's roadmap for stability, peace, prosperity and development in Afghanistan.
In his speech, President Hamid Karzai said there is desire on both sides to expand and strengthen economic relations. He said it is ultimately our economies that will hold the two countries strong.
He said Afghanistan and Pakistan are working together to get out of current environment of distrust and move towards greater cooperation and better future.
The Afghan President expressed pleasure over presence of both government and political leadership in the luncheon hosted in his honour and said this was reflective of the strength of Pakistan's democracy and the nation.
