Collingwood thrash Demons by 88 points
SYDNEY (AAP) - June 13 - A career-best six-goal haul by power forward Travis Cloke helped Collingwood cruise to an 88-point AFL thrashing of Melbourne at the MCG on Monday.
The Magpies made light of the absence of midfielders Dane Swan, Dale Thomas and Dayne Beams and ruckman Darren Jolly to win 19.15 (129) to 6.5 (41) in front of a crowd of 75,998.
It leaves Collingwood's three-point loss to unbeaten Geelong in round eight as their only defeat this season, while Melbourne's struggle to string creditable performances together continues.
Cloke single-handedly matched Melbourne's goal total, with his dominance in the air showing what Melbourne lacked.
The Demons started brightly, kicking two of the first three goals of the match.
But the Magpies then took over, booting the last two goals of the first term, then outscoring Melbourne 6.1 to 1.3 in the second quarter to build a commanding 38-point lead by the long break.
Cloke had five majors by then, including four in the second quarter, as Collingwood took control.
He was far too big and strong in marking contests for starting opponent Jared Rivers, who was replaced by James Frawley nearing halftime.
After a tight start to the third quarter, an increasingly-confident Cloke booted a 60m goal 15 minutes into the term to reach the six-goal mark for the first time in his career.
Collingwood stretched the lead to 53 points when midfielder Scott Pendlebury snapped soon after.
At that stage, Colin Sylvia (four goals) was Melbourne's only scorer.
Jeremy Howe and Liam Jurrah finally joined him in the third quarter, but the Magpies powered home in the last, kicking the final eight goals.
In the absence of several of Collingwood's midfield prime-movers, Sharrod Wellingham shone out with his clearance work, gathering a career-high haul of 37 disposals and kicking a classy third-term goal.
Leon Davis also provided plenty of midfield drive with some line-breaking runs.
Veteran defender Chris Tarrant did an excellent job to keep Melbourne captain Brad Green goalless, with fellow Demons' forward target Jurrah also very quiet.
For Melbourne, midfielders Brent Moloney and Tom Scully worked hard, Sylvia was their only threatening forward and Joel Macdonald battled hard in defence
