Thai PM visits Indonesia for WEF on East Asia

BANGKOK, June 13 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is paying a one-day visit to Indonesia today to attend the 20th World Economic Forum or WEF on East Asia in Jakarta.

Abhisit and his entourage flew from Bangkok early Monday morning and arrived in the Indonesian capital at around 9:25am. At the 20th WEF on East Asia, Abhisit said he would propose that Thailand be the host of the WEF on East Asia next year. Among Asian-Pacific economies, only Singapore and Hong Kong formerly hosted WEF events in the past.

The Democrat caretaker premier was also scheduled to head other Thai delegates at a meetting with Dr. Klaus Schwab, founder and administrative director of the WEF, and have lunch with regional business leaders, as well as hold talks with senior executives of the UK-based Unilever Corporation.

Abhisit earlier said that he would promote business confidence among countries in the region and would told regional business leaders that Thai politics has followed a democratic process and Thailand has strong potential for sustainable development in the food, automobile, tourism and service sectors. Abhisit was also scheduled to meet with international journalists and join a televised BBC TV debate on the topic "Who Owns the Wealth" this afternoon.

The Thai caretaker premier will later lead the Thai delegation to participate in the East Asian Forum’s closing ceremony. They will then fly back to Bangkok tonight. (TNA)
