Thai and Burmese authorities to discuss about the new round of the nationality verification of Burmese immigrant workers
BANGKOK, June 12 (TNA) - Thai and Burmese authorities will meet next week to discuss about the new round of nationality verification and the legal registration of illegal Burmese workers in Thailand, which are set for June 15-July 14 this year.
Thai Labor Minister Chalermchai Sri-on confirmed Deputy Burmese Foreign Minister U Maung Myint would visit Thailand on June 14-17 to discuss the issues.
Chalermchai said Myint was scheduled to visit an immigrant worker registration center in Samut Sakhon province on June 15. On June 16, he would visit Thai factories that hired Burmese workers and attend a meeting of Thai and Burmese foreign affairs officials in Bangkok.
Myint’s visit came after the authorities of the two counties agreed to open two new facilities for the nationality verification in Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Sawan provinces to replace the one in Tak province which stopped operating due to security reason along the Thai-Burmese border.
According to the Ministry of Labour, about 500,000 of 800,000 immigrant workers from Burma, Laos and Cambodia have already undergone their nationality verification. The nationality verification of the other is expected to be completed at the end of the year or before March next year at the latest. (TNA)
