EC to increase polling units for Thailand's advance voting

BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) says that it will increase polling units in areas where voters will cast their ballots in advance, set on June 26 from 8am to 3pm.

Police Major General Suthep Romyanont, who heads election commissioners in Bangkok, said that over one million eligible voters had registered for the advance voting in the capital alone; so, polling units for the June 26 advance general election might not be able to serve all of the people, particularly in six districts in the city, namely Bang Khen, Bang Kapi, Lat Krabang, Bang Khunthian, Din Daeng and Bang Na.

Therefore, Bangkok's election authorities have agreed to increase the number of polling units in Bang Kapi to 130 and there will be about 100 polling units in each of the remaining five districts for the advance polling.

Police Major General Suthep assessed that overall vote campaigns by all Thai political parties have remained smooth so far, as no untoward incidents had happened.

However, the EC and the Royal Thai Police acknowledged fierce competition in the country's upcoming general election, set on July 3, especially in the northern Phayao and Chiang Rai Provinces; so, local police and election authorities have kept monitoring the situation in their respective areas and intensifying security measures to cope with any untoward incident.
