BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) - Thai Supreme Commander General Songkitti Jakkabatr is leading a Thai armed forces delegation to pay an official visit to Myanmar, as invited by the Myanmar military, aimed to strengthen military ties and cooperation between Thailand and the neighbouring country.
General Songkitti, who left for Myanmar earlier on Saturday, told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Myanmar President General Theing Seng and meeting with his Myanmar counterpart General Min Aung Hlaing upon his arrival in the neighbouring country that he discussed with the two Myanmar top military leaders on bilateral military cooperation against cross-border drug trafficking and other crime activities and on joint military drills, as well as information and technical exchanges between the Thai and Myanmar armed forces at all levels.
The Thai armed forces chief said that he had also proposed the resumption of a Thai-Myanmar Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting later this year, following several years of suspension.
According to the Thai supreme commander, his Myanmar counterpart and the Myanmar President also conveyed their best wishes to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and their regards to Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, saying that they believed Thailand's forthcoming general election, set on July 3, would be successful and expressing their appreciation to the long time development of democracy in Thailand.
